Story

„The medieval novel “The Ship of Fools„ which is based on the fact that before insane asylums existed, criminals and madmen were put on ships to be gotten rid of, sailing the seas for years, has been an inspiration for numerous artists throughout the centuries.. The image of a ship filled with fools, seafaring through the oceans of life, is a metaphor not only depicting the foolhardiness of mankind – the detailed descriptions of the different fools within the ship describe current character traits as well as ancient ones.

The timelessness of this story appealed to Danielle de Picciotto and Alexander Hacke, inspiring them to compose a show based on eleven fools described in the book, presenting the seduction of follies, their downfall and hidden assets by means of music and projected visuals.

The artists De Picciotto/ Hacke are known for being unconventional – ever involved in discovering new ways of presenting avant-garde ideas or interaction among cultures and generations. With the performance „The Ship Of Fools” it was their objective to explicate the novel by Sebastian Brant in a very contemporary spirit – emphasizing that medieval themes are astonishingly up to date politically, religiously and sociologically – mirroring them in different cultural traditions to highlight their international relevance with oriental rhythms, American sideshow and country themes, south pacific tiki aspects or Berlin underground statements. The interaction among text, music and video represents a „state - of - the – art” approach to classic literature, traditional and electronic music, art and film.

The artists present each of the 11 chapters with a short recital of Brant’s original text. After reading they illustrate the described fool with music and visuals. Deep bass lines, scraping metal, melancholic autoharps, violent guitar riffs, bizarre sound recordings, electronic break beats, long forgotten tango tunes entwined with Hackes magnificent singing and Danielle’s mystic lyrics are illuminated by intricate projections depicting illustrated scenes of fools debauchery, burlesque dance clips and colorful tiki animations (all drawings and filming by Danielle de Picciotto). The artists present a magical world –a dreamlike mirror of the one we are all living in –this live performance is charged with laconic humor and fantasy inviting us to not only be seduced by its follies but also be conscious of its possible downfall.

Geschichte
Die Aufführung „Das „Narrenschiff“ von Danielle de Picciotto und Alexander Hacke erarbeitet, greift den Impuls Sebastian Brants auf, mittels Sprache und Bildern das menschliche Leben als eine gedankenlose Schiffsreise über das Meer darzustellen, verstrickt in Sünden und Laster, angetrieben von begehrlichen Wünschen und Hoffnungen, verblendet im Blick für die Wahrheit des Menschen, dem Verderben und Untergang droht. Die fortdauernde Aktualität des 1494 veröffentlichten Werkes mit seiner satirischen Verbindung zu Politik, Religion und Kultur hat die Künstler De Picciotto und Hacke zu einer eigenen Version inspiriert. Dank ihrer vielseitigen musikalischen und künstlerischen Talente bieten sie einen neuen, ganz individuellen Kommentar zum heutigen globalen Narrentanz.

Aufführung
Die Künstler Hacke /De Picciotto sind dafür bekannt unkonventionelle, interkulturelle Projekte zu initieren. Bei der Aufführung „Das Narrenschiff“ ging es Ihnen vorallem darum das Buch von Sebastian Brant,um seine internationale Aktualität hervorzuheben, sehr zeitgemäss aufzuführen.

Dies wird mittels u.a. mit orientalischen Rythmen, süd pazifischen Kultsymbolen, amerikanischen Country und Kirmes Ikonography und Deutschem Kulturgut vorgeführt. Die Interaktion der mittelalterlichen Texte, traditioneller und elektronischer Musik, Zeichnungen und Filmaufnahmen spricht sehr bewußt ein „state –of-the -art“ Publikum an, welches an gegenwärtigen Ausdrucksformen interessiert ist. In der Aufführung präsentieren De Picciotto/ Hacke elf der von Brant beschriebenen Narren mittels gelesenen Texten, live aufgeführter Musik und Projektionen. Tiefe Bass Frequenzen, knirschendes Metal, melancholische Harfenklänge, aggressive Gitarren Riffs, verzerrte Sounds und verstaubte Tangoaufnahmen untermalen den großartigen Gesang von Alexander Hacke und die mystischen Texte von Danielle de Picciotto. Die Musik und rezitierte Lyrik von Brant werden von einer schillernden Projektionswelt umrankt , die aus Zeichnungen und Filmaufnahmen von Danielle de Picciotto bestehen. Das Künstlerpaar präsentiert eine magische Welt des Narrentums – als Spiegel aber auch als Warnung. Mit lakonischem Humor und bedingungsloser Exzessivität wird die Verführung und Gefahr dieser unserer Welt vorgeführt.
